The lingam is an upright stone, which is often phallic in shape, and is a classic depiction of Shiva. There are two categories of lingam : the manuṣi-liṅga made by man, and the svayambhu-liṅga, a lingam created by itself, a natural element that is worshipped as a lingam, such as some stones.
