Jean Gorin was a student of Mondrian, who inspired most of Gorin's artistic credo. In 1939 Gorin worked experimentally with Antoine Pevsner. In particular, he produced a painted metal relief, Rythmes dynamiques - Hommage à Pevsner n° 30 (MNAM, Centre Pompidou), of which the present work is undoubtedly a highly accomplished study. Circles, obliques and curves mark the distance he has taken from his master Mondrian and make this small dynamic bas-relief warm and inviting. Few of his pre-war works survive, many having been destroyed by the artist.

In Hommage à Pevsner, Marianne Le Pommeré writes: ‘This relief, which is unusual in Gorin's style, was executed at the instigation of the sculptor Pevsner and with his collaboration. Pevsner wanted to persuade the Mondrian disciple of the greater expressiveness of dynamic rhythms, given by the oblique and curvilinear forms.
