Zao Wou-Ki is fascinated by oil painting, which he studied in both the Academy of Hangzhou and at the Anadémie de la Grande Chamière in Paris. Though his parents had an important collecion of historical Chinese ink paintings and Zao Wou-Ki was an accomplished calligrapher, it is only in the 1970s that his friend and fellow artist Henri Michaux convinces him to come back to ink painting.
This work, created in 1978, is part of those historical early ink paintings. Examples from this same period can be found in museums all over the world, from the MoMA in New-York to the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
