A painter of the North of France, Eugène Leroy takes inspiration from Baroque masters of colour and chiaroscuro, such as Rubens and especially Rembrandt. At the very frontier between Figuration and Abstraction, the series of Crucifixions by Leroy from the early '50s displays the Humanist penchant of artists in the immediate Post-War in France, such as Germaine Richier or Jean Fautrier. The thick impasto, leading to an art informel dissolution of the human figure, is also in keeping with the sensibilities of this current.
