On the banks of the Seine, a bent tree stands out against the sky; the lights of the city's streetlights appear in the distance and are reflected in the water. Jahan constructs this image around depth and reflections, thus offering a silent view of the still-sleeping capital. From the 1930s onward, these nocturnal photographs of Paris formed an important thread in his work.Following his move to Paris in 1933, Pierre Jahan met Emmanuel Sougez, then director of the photographic department at the newspaper L’Illustration. It was on his advice that he decided to dedicate himself to photography professionally. At the same time, he worked as a freelance photographer, taking pictures of Paris at night.
