An orchestra consisting of an accordion and drums provides music for a popular dance during Bastille Day celebrations, against a backdrop of lanterns and pennants. Silhouettes of dancing couples stand out subtly in the foreground; light punctuates the evening's twilight in places. Beyond the monuments and iconic Parisian landmarks, Jahan offers a glimpse into Parisian life and its nocturnal activity. Following his move to Paris in 1933, Pierre Jahan met Emmanuel Sougez, then director of the photographic department at the newspaper L’Illustration. It was on Sougez's advice that he decided to dedicate himself to photography professionally. At the same time, he worked as a freelance photographer, capturing images of Paris at night.
