Pablo Picasso Espagnol, 1881-1973
Copy from the separate proofs, with large margins, printed by Desjobert, Paris.
The theme of the Studio, and more generally of creation itself fascinates Picasso in the 1930s, and will reach its zenith with the creation of the Vollard Suite, his magnum opus in printmaking. It is also a time where Picasso goes back to clasical and mythological themes : in this studio scene, a dreamed image of the Rapt of Europa can be seen, giving Picasso the opportunity to reprise one of his favourite themes : the Bull.
Henri Marie Petiet (1894-1980) was one of the greatest dealers and collectors of prints and rare books of the 20th century. After the death of Ambroise Vollard in 1939, one of the best-known publishers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Petiet bought the whole of the Vollard collection.
