This work is the original gouache that served as an illustration of Roland Dorgelès memoire "Au Beau temps de la Butte", published in 1949. In this book, Roland Dorgelès, then a young journalist, recounts his memories of several figures of the artistic and literary Bohemia that called La Butte de Montmartre home in the early 20th century - among them Kees Van Dongen. This work is, thus, a self-portrait of the artist in his day to day life.
