Through his tight framing and masterful use of light, Pierre Jahan transforms these marble fragments into almost living bodies, whose silent presence evokes the strange sensuality of Plain-Chant's nudes. The comparison lies as much in the treatment of forms as in the light, which reveals volumes, emphasizes curves, and maintains an ambiguity between sculptural immobility and carnal presence.Through this series, the photography of the Saint-Denis necropolises transcends mere documentary inventory to rework sculpture through light. By isolating the effigies in stark chiaroscuro and tight framing, the image detaches the figures from their architectural and dynastic context. The raking light brings out the texture of the stone, its wear and tear, and its fractures, transforming the funerary monument into a motif that is both abstract and intimate, focused on matter, silence, and time.
