This work is a study for the painting Woman Holding a Bird, produced in the same year and listed in the Catalogue raisonné of André Masson's painted works under no. 1924*13, pp. 192–193. The canvas is nowadays in the collections of the Cantini Museum in Marseille, France.
This large format work on paper presents Masson on the frontieer between Cubism and Surrealism : while the division of the space is still reminiscent of the former, the dream-like atmosphere of the composition and the bird motif is emblematic of the latter.
