A man appears at the window of a barbershop on Boulevard Sébastopol, framed by the shop's signs. The low-angle shot creates a striking composition and an almost theatrical Parisian scene, transformed under Jahan's photographic eye, with a touch of humor from the photographer who readily reveals ordinary scenes of the city. After settling in Paris in 1933, Pierre Jahan met Emmanuel Sougez, then director of the photographic department at the newspaper L’Illustration. It was on Sougez's advice that he decided to dedicate himself to photography professionally. At the same time, he worked as a freelance photographer, taking pictures of Paris at night.
