Pablo Picasso Spanish, 1881-1973
The year must be 1915, or 1916, the two years given in the Zervos catalogue where most of these drawings were published in 1942 - early enough for Picasso himself, or more likely Kahnweiler, his art dealer, to have given us this information. To be more precise, let us put forward the year 1916, since many of the drawings are closely related to paintings or watercolours dating from this period.
... Still life with a guitar on a pedestal table has the same subject, the same vertical format and the same one dated 1915 by the artist himself but clearly reworked later (Daix 811), the other bearing the inscription - 1916. They evoke Jean Cocteau's comment about those years: "... a dictatorship weighed on Montmartre and Montparnasse: objects that could fit on a café table, a Spanish guitar for example, were the only authorized entertainment.
