Niki de Saint Phalle French-American, 1924-2010
Niki de Saint Phalle is known for her sculptures and assemblages featuring monumental forms, vibrant colors, and richly decorated surfaces. Her body of work is notably characterized by her "shooting paintings"—created using plaster and paint containers concealed beneath the surface—and subsequently by her famous "Nanas," the colorful, voluptuous female figures she began creating in 1965.
Her work also extends to set design, film, graphic arts, and the creation of sculptural environments. The Tarot Garden, her ambitious sculpture park in Tuscany, brings together monumental figures, glass and ceramic mosaics, mirrors, fountains, and walk-in sculptures. Her creations combine a playful, monumental quality with a world defined by color, sensual forms, and ornamentation.
