Picasso loved animals, and animal depictions populate his work as early as the Blue Period, where a pet monkey makes appearences in several famous canvases.
The goat is one of the recurring characters in Picasso's bestiary, together with the owl and the bull. It was his second wife an muse, Jacqueline, whom he meets at the Madoura ceramic workshop, that will actually gift him a pet goat called Esmeralda.
