The Suite Vollard comprises one hundred prints made from copperplates engraved by Picasso between 1930 and 1937, a period that marked a new turning point in the artist's life: the first major retrospectives of his work, in 1932, consecrated his professional success, while on the private front his passionate affair with a new muse, the young Marie-Thérèse Walter, inspired a new artistic renewal for Picasso.
In the Vollard Suite classical and idealised depictions of the painter and his model - the latter often under the traits of Marie-Thèrese, the painter an alter-ego of Picasso, abound. As such, the series is a meditation on the very act of creating art. Henri Marie Petiet (1894-1980) was one of the greatest dealers and collectors of prints and rare books of the 20th century. After the death of Ambroise Vollard in 1939, one of the best-known publishers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Petiet took over the Vollard collection.
