Germaine Richier occupies a central place in the history of modern sculpture, serving as
a link between Rodin and the early César. Trained in the tradition of Auguste Rodin and
Antoine Bourdelle, much like Alberto Giacometti, Germaine Richier established herself as
profoundly original and radical in just over 25 years, from the 1930s until her untimely
death in 1959. Richier brought about an existentialist revitalization of the figure, forging
new images of men and women in the postwar period.
In the early 1950s, Germaine Richier found a fragment of an ancient amphora on the
beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône). From this fragment, she
sculpted a seated woman. The neck of the vase, with its handles and chipped spout,
completes this headless figure. The voluptuous forms of the torso contrast with the
slenderness of the legs, as delicate as the framework supporting them. This creates an
effect of weightlessness, of surging energy: the fertility of the female body with its ample
bosom.
But the power of water is evident in the deep indentations of the bronze, hollowed out at
the belly, as if subjected to erosion. On its still-fresh clay, the artist poured seaweed
gathered from the beaches of Normandy.
The sculpture exudes a sense of calm and eternity, but also of fragility and
precariousness. Only the tips of her feet, delicately protruding from the terrace, create a
dynamic effect directed toward the viewer.
